CITIZENSHIP BY BIRTH

citizenhip by birth

Citizenship by Birth applies to individuals who are born within the borders of South Africa. Generally, a child born in South Africa automatically acquires citizenship if at least one parent is a South African citizen or permanent resident at the time of birth. Proof of birth and parental status must be provided when applying for a South African birth certificate, identity document, or passport. This form of citizenship ensures that children born in South Africa have full legal rights and access to all benefits and protections afforded to South African citizens.

Citizenship by Birth applies to individuals born in South Africa under certain conditions outlined in the South African Citizenship Act.
It ensures that children born in the country can claim citizenship when specific legal criteria are met.

A person qualifies for South African citizenship by birth if:

They were born in South Africa and at least one parent was a South African citizen or permanent resident at the time of birth; or

They were born in South Africa to foreign parents, and

  • They hold no other citizenship, and
  • They live in South Africa from birth to the age of majority (18), and
  • They have registered their birth with the Department of Home Affairs.

A late registration of birth may delay or complicate the application.

Applicants should ensure all birth records are registered correctly with the Department of Home Affairs.
