CITIZENSHIP BY DESCENT

citizenhip by descent

Citizenship by Descent allows individuals born outside South Africa to acquire South African citizenship through their parents. Typically, a child born to a South African citizen parent automatically qualifies, even if born abroad. Applicants must provide proof of their parent’s South African citizenship, the child’s birth certificate, and other supporting documents as required by the Department of Home Affairs. Citizenship by descent ensures that South Africans living abroad can transmit citizenship to their children and may serve as a basis for applying for passports or national identification.

Citizenship by Descent applies to individuals born outside South Africa who have at least one South African parent at the time of their birth.
This category ensures that South Africans abroad can pass their citizenship to their children, provided certain registration and documentation requirements are met.

An individual may qualify for citizenship by descent if:

They were born outside South Africa and one or both parents were South African citizens at the time of birth; and

Their birth was registered at a South African mission (embassy or consulate) or with the Department of Home Affairs; or

They were adopted by a South African citizen in terms of South African law and their birth and adoption were registered accordingly.

The applicant must provide proof of the parent’s South African citizenship at the time of birth.

The applicant must not have renounced or lost South African citizenship.
