EXCHANGE VISA

exchange visa

An Exchange Visa is intended for foreigners participating in approved cultural, economic, or educational exchange programs in South Africa. It is commonly granted to students, interns, or trainees involved in short-term exchange arrangements between institutions or organisations. The visa promotes skills development, cultural understanding, and international collaboration. It is usually valid for the duration of the program, up to 24 months, and cannot be renewed or extended. Applicants must provide proof of acceptance into a recognised exchange program and assurance that they will return to their home country upon completion.

The Exchange Visa is intended for foreign nationals participating in approved cultural, educational, or research exchange programs in South Africa.

It allows individuals, often students, interns, or volunteers, to live in South Africa temporarily while taking part in a structured program approved by the Department of Home Affairs.

Common exchange categories include:

Students participating in academic exchange programs between institutions.

Interns or trainees gaining practical work experience.

Participants in cultural, youth, or leadership exchange initiatives.

An Exchange Visa is generally issued for the duration of the specific program, up to a maximum of 12 months for participants under 25 years old.
In the case of academic or research programs, the visa may be issued for the full length of the approved exchange period.

The program must be officially recognised and approved by the Department of Home Affairs.

Applicants must provide a letter of participation from both the sending and receiving institutions or organisations.

Proof of sufficient financial means and medical insurance for the duration of stay is required.

Participants must depart South Africa upon completion of the program.

  • Exchange Visa holders may not apply for a change of visa status from within South Africa.

The visa cannot be extended beyond the approved program duration.

Participants are not permitted to take up permanent employment in South Africa.

Holders who overstay or fail to comply with conditions may be declared undesirable.

The visa remains valid only for the duration of the approved program.

Renewal is not permitted, and applicants who wish to return must submit a new application through an approved program.

Once the exchange period ends, the visa automatically lapses, and the holder must leave South Africa.
