RELATIVE VISA

relative visa

A Relative Visa allows foreign nationals to join and reside with their qualifying family members who are South African citizens or permanent residents. This visa is ideal for spouses, children, parents, or other close relatives seeking to live together in South Africa. The South African sponsor must provide proof of their relationship and demonstrate the financial means to support the applicant. The visa is typically issued for up to two years and may be renewed as long as the qualifying relationship and financial support remain in place.

The Relative Visa is designed for foreign nationals who wish to join or remain with their immediate family members who are South African citizens or permanent residents.

It enables family reunification by allowing relatives to reside lawfully in South Africa, provided they are biologically or legally related to the South African sponsor.

Common qualifying relationships include:

Spouse or life partner (in legally recognised relationships)

Parents and children (biological or legally adopted)

Siblings, grandparents, or grandchildren (depending on degree of kinship and discretion of the Department of Home Affairs)

The Relative Visa is generally issued for a period of up to two years, depending on the relationship and supporting documentation. It can be renewed while the qualifying relationship remains valid.

The South African citizen or permanent resident must act as a sponsor

The sponsor must provide proof of financial means of at least R8,500 per month per person (as determined by regulation).

Applicants must submit official documents proving the family relationship, such as birth certificates, marriage certificates, or other legal proof.

TThe visa allows residence only, separate authorization is required for any form of work or study.

Holders of a Relative Visa

may not work, study, or conduct business.

unless endorsed or authorised under a separate visa condition.

The visa is strictly tied to the family relationship, if that relationship ceases or the sponsor withdraws support, the visa may be canceled or not renewed.

It does not automatically lead to permanent residence, except where eligibility exists under specific provisions of the Immigration Act.

The visa remains valid for the period approved by the Department of Home Affairs and may be renewed before expiry

Renewal requires updated proof of the ongoing family relationship and continued financial support from the South African sponsor.

After a qualifying period (usually five years of continuous residence), applicants may be eligible to apply for permanent residence under Section 26(a) of the Immigration Act, provided all conditions are met.
